589 The Core Functions of Addictions Counseling

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on core functions of addictions.
Although addictions counseling shares many competencies with other human service professions, healthcare licensing authorities acknowledge that chemical dependency counseling requires a specific focus. The central purpose of this course is to address the core elements of effective addiction counseling. The content will consider professional standards that guide addiction counselor�s work; the scope of practice that is appropriate for an addiction counselor; and the competencies that are most likely to be associated with positive treatment outcomes. This five week course will concentrate on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are essential to the addiction counseling profession.
Instructor
John Thompson, MA, CDP, LMHC is currently an Administrator/Clinical Supervisor at Pinnacle Peak Institute an outpatient treatment program in Washington State. He is a MET/CBT CSAT national consultant/trainer and a national GAIN trainer. John was an instructor in the Chemical Dependency Professional Institute through Tacoma Community College for six years. John obtained a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Chapman University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Western Washington University. He is a certified chemical dependency counselor and a licensed mental health counselor in the State of Washington. He began working in the field of Chemical Dependency treatment in 1989. John has worked as a therapist in a diverse breadth of settings including school based programs, juvenile institutions, street outreach, inpatient & outpatient AOD treatment facilities.
Course Objectives
- Provide an overview to the current role of addiction counseling
- Discuss ICRC’s 12-Core Functions as they relate to the addiction field Review and contrast CSAT’s TAP Publication #21: Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice
- Review current research findings that provide new guidance and direction in treatment approaches
- Present new links to state and federal sites that will provide ongoing information
Course Requirements
This is a five-week course, beginning on December 19, 2011. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.
A full refund is available up until December 27, 2011 after which there will be no refunds.
Accreditation

- This five-week course, which begins on December 19, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 10 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
- ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 3 clock hours will be provided for this event.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
