624 The Core Functions of Addictions Counseling

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on core functions of addictions.

In 2010, an estimated 22.1 million Americans aged 12 or older were classified with substance dependence in the past year and thousands of others went undiagnosed. Less than ten percent of individuals suffering from this disease will receive any help for their addiction. Stigma, shame, guilt and fear often inhibit individuals and families with loved ones suffering from dependency from seeking support and assistance in accessing life saving help for the disease. Often times the system established to serve those suffering from the disease of dependency creates barriers to accessing the care they need. The emphasis for all interactions with those suffering from the disease of dependency should focus on the concepts of healthy “Recovery”. The purpose of this course is to briefly examine the current system of addictions care and present a brief description of a “Recovery Oriented Systems of Care” (ROSC) model. Additionally the content will consider the role of counselors and other professionals in a ROSC. Professionals serving this population can better assist their patients through a better understanding of the professional standards that guide their work; the scope of practice that is appropriate for an addiction counselor; and the competencies that are most likely to be associated with positive recovery outcomes. This five week course will concentrate on understanding the treatment of individuals who suffer from the disease of chemical dependency and the system for which they receive care; the role of addictions professionals; and the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are essential to the addictions professional to promote recovery.

Instructor

John Thompson, MA, CDP, LMHC is currently an Administrator/Clinical Supervisor at Pinnacle Peak Institute an outpatient treatment program in Washington State. He is a MET/CBT CSAT national consultant/trainer and a national GAIN trainer. John was an instructor in the Chemical Dependency Professional Institute through Tacoma Community College for six years. John obtained a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Chapman University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Western Washington University. He is a certified chemical dependency counselor and a licensed mental health counselor in the State of Washington. He began working in the field of Chemical Dependency treatment in 1989. John has worked as a therapist in a diverse breadth of settings including school based programs, juvenile institutions, street outreach, inpatient & outpatient AOD treatment facilities.

Course Objectives

• Provide an overview of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC)
• Provide an overview of the current role of addiction professionals in a ROSC
• Discuss ICRC’s 12-Core Functions as they relate to the addiction field
• Review and contrast CSAT’s TAP Publication #21: Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice
• Present new links to state and federal sites that will provide ongoing information

Course Requirements

This is a five-week course, beginning on June 18, 2012. Requirements are:

• Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
• Completion of pre and post test
• Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
• Participation in the weekly course forum
• Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

• This five-week course, which begins on June 18, 2012, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
• This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 10 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
• The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.

• ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 3 clock hours will be provided for this event.
