584 Challenges of Re-entry for the Criminal Justice Population

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on challenges of re-entry for the criminal justice population.
What happens once an offender has completed their prison sentence and has paid their “debt” to society? Reentry planning involves the use of programs targeted at promoting the effective reintegration of offenders back to communities upon release from prison and jail. The offender released from prison faces serious needs as they re-enter the community and begin to overcome obstacles such as drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, psychiatric and mental disorders, long absences from family and friends, legal and practical limitations coupled with the strangeness of everyday living.
Finding support for this adjustment and avoiding relapse are two of many obstacles that most offenders face. The reality is that the vast majority of offenders released from prison remains subject to community correctional authority and must adapt to the challenges of mandated treatment and programs.
During this course, the participant will explore practices that are effective and evidence based in providing ongoing support and reinforcement to the offender who is re- entering society.
Instructor
Brenda Westberry, is a retired Chief Adult Probation Officer for the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch. She has over 21 years experience in the field of Criminal Justice working with substance abuse treatment agencies and key community organizations while servicing diverse criminal justice populations.
Brenda is a professor in the Sociology, Social Work and Applied Sciences Department at Eastern Connecticut State University as well as an adjunct professor at Mitchell College in the Criminal Justice Department. Brenda has been teaching at the collegiate level for the past 15 years where she has taught courses such as, The Criminal Justice System, Victimology, Correctional Classification and Treatment, Human Services, Probation and Parole, Violence in Relationships, Cultural Diversity and Sociology.
Brenda is a faculty member of the New England School of Addiction Studies and the Advanced New England School of Best Practices where she has taught workshops on topics such as, Advanced Motivational Interviewing, Case Planning and Integrated Assessments, Women Offenders, Post Release Life for Offenders leaving Corrections and Verbal Intervention Strategies for the Helping Professional.
Brenda is a current member of the American Association of University Professors, American Society for Training and Development and the American Correctional Association.
Brenda holds a Masters’ Degree in Sociology and a Bachelors’ degree in Justice and Law Administration.
Course Objectives
- Identify stages of re-entry planning and evidence based practices when working with offenders in the criminal justice system.
- Explore community based programs and services that have resulted in the offenders successful re-entry back into the community. As well as explore targeted supervision strategies to deal with the critical needs of high risk offender cases.
- Learn strategies to engage and motivate the mandated offender into compliance with community corrections and community based programs.
- Analyze gender differences as it relates to women and men in the re-entry process.
- The participant will be able to gain an understanding of substance abuse disorders that impact the offender as the treatment and recovery process begins during the community re- entry phase.

Course Requirements
This is a four-week course, beginning on November 28, 2011. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

Accreditation

- This four-week course, which begins on November 28, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
- ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 4 clock hours will be provided for this event.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
