559 Effective Strategies For Engaging Youth With Co-Occurring Disorders

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) in colaboration with the Brown University Distance Learning Program, is offering a credited, on-line course on co-occurring disorders among adolescents.

This workshop will explore of some of the more significant aspects of Co-occurring disorders among adolescents. The relationship between chemical use, abuse and dependency and the occurrence of other mental health disorders will be reviewed. The importance of understanding this relationship and its complex connection to effective screening, assessment, diagnosis and treatment will also be explored. Examples of effective engagement techniques and treatment activities will be presented and discussed.

Instructor

Michael Torch is an addiction treatment provider with over 30 years experience. He was recognized by the New Hampshire Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor’s Association in 2002 with its “Life Time Achievement Award”. Currently providing behavioral health consultation, evidence-based practice adoption consultation and training as well as technology transfer consultation. He currently serves as a member of the US Probation Service’s New England Critical Incident Stress Management Team and is the Senior Technology Transfer Specialist for the Addiction Technology Transfer Center-New England at Brown University. Michael has been a trainer of alcohol and drug counselors for over 25 years with extensive experience treating chemically dependent adolescents, trauma victims, and individuals under the supervision of the criminal justice system. His professional experience includes practice in public schools, correctional environments, treating law enforcement personnel, inpatient chemical dependency programs, outpatient practice and consultant to a First Nation Healing Program.

Course Objectives

  • Define adolescence and adolescent chemical dependency.
  • Define the terminology and prevalence of dual disorders among youth.
  • Review skills and Issues of screening, diagnosis, and assessment.
  • Review basic counseling techniques useful with this population.
  • Define Principles of Integrated Treatment with this population.
  • Review strategies of engaging Youth with co-occurring disorders on programmatic levels.

Course Requirements

This is a four-week course, beginning on July 11, 2011. Requirements are:

  • Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
  • Completion of pre and post test
  • Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
  • Participation in the weekly course forum
  • Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

A full refund is available up until July 19, 2011 after which there will be no refunds.

Accreditation

  • This four-week course, which begins on July 11, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
  • This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
  • The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
  • Brown DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 6 clock hours will be provided for this event.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
