570 Substance Use Disorders Within Intimate Partner Violence of Women

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on substance use disorders within intimate partner violence of women.
Domestic violence and substance abuse are two separate but interrelated issues which are pervasive in today’s society. These are chronic issues which are punctuated by acute incidents that require professional interventions which are best provided within an integrated, comprehensive continuum of care by culturally appropriate treatment staff. The goal of this course is to provide mental health, substance abuse and violence prevention professionals with philosophies and treatment options to treat women and their families who are effected by domestic violence and substance abuse. This will be accomplished through on-line presentations, additional readings question & answer activities.
Instructor
Deoshore Haig, MSW, has twenty-five years of experience working with culturally diverse communities and managing health and human service programs. As an independent consultant, Ms. Haig’s services include designing and facilitating diversity and cultural competency training, developing health promotion programs, conducting program evaluations and providing technical assistance for organizational development. Deoshore has also served as a Special Guest Lecturer at Providence College, teaching diversity and cultural skills through the Social Work Department.
Ms. Haig received her BA from Potsdam College and has a Masters in Social Work from Rhode Island College. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and volunteers as a Health Advocate for the Health Connection Program through Lifespan.
Course Objectives
- To define the issues of domestic violence and substance abuse
- To explore the relationship between domestic violence and substance abuse
- To explore the role of socialization and gender issues in domestic violence and substance abuse
- To describe treatment interventions in the treatment of�domestic violence and substance abuse
- To assist professionals in developing referral sources, locating shelters and other resources
Course Requirements
This is a five-week course, beginning on September 19, 2011. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.
A full refund is available up until September 27, 2011 after which there will be no refunds.
Accreditation

- This five-week course, which begins on September 19, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 10 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
- ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 3 clock hours will be provided for this event.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
