565 Adolescent Chemical Dependency: Current Perspectives And Treatment Approaches

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on adolescent chemical dependency.

This workshop will review current perspectives on this very difficult treatment population. A discussion of the participants’ experiences with the clinically challenging tasks of treating adolescents and their families will occur. A number of effective treatment techniques and approaches will be presented. Specific topics to be reviewed will include: Developmentally appropriate assessment techniques, bio-genetic influences and consequences, neurological functioning and condition progression. As well as intervention and recovery strategies that are developmentally functional and engaging that combine cognitive behavioral and 12 step approaches.

Instructor

Michael Torch is an addiction treatment provider with over 30 years experience. He was recognized by the New Hampshire Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor’s Association in 2002 with its “Life Time Achievement Award”. Currently providing behavioral health consultation, evidence-based practice adoption consultation and training as well as technology transfer consultation. He currently serves as a member of the US Probation Service’s New England Critical Incident Stress Management Team and is the Senior Technology Transfer Specialist for the Addiction Technology Transfer Center-New England at Brown University. Michael has been a trainer of alcohol and drug counselors for over 25 years with extensive experience treating chemically dependent adolescents, trauma victims, and individuals under the supervision of the criminal justice system. His professional experience includes practice in public schools, correctional environments, treating law enforcement personnel, inpatient chemical dependency programs, outpatient practice and consultant to a First Nation Healing Program.

Course Objectives

Gain an understanding of the developmental differences between adolescent and adult chemical dependency.
Identify the current adolescent use patterns and their relationship to effective treatment techniques.
Gain an understanding of the neurological conditioning that creates cognitive barriers to recovery for this population.
Discuss some productive activities that are useful with patients.
Interact with others that understand why we want to work with this population.

Course Requirements

This is a five-week course, beginning on August 22, 2011. Requirements are:

Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
Completion of pre and post test
Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
Participation in the weekly course forum
Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

Accreditation

This five-week course, which begins on August 22, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 10 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.

ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 10 clock hours will be provided for this event.
