563 Living Life on Life’s Terms: Integrating Spirituality into the Therapeutic Process with Addicted Adults

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on integrating spirituality into the therapeutic process with addicted adults.
For years the spiritual component of the recovery process has largely fallen under the auspices of Twelve Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Recently, however, there has been an increased awareness and interest in spiritual practices and processes as adjuncts to more traditional medical and psychotherapeutic interventions in the addictive process. This course will explore some of the latest thinking on the value of spiritual beliefs and practices in the recovery process and how the addictions counselor can integrate a spiritual focus into treatment without pushing a particular religion or set of beliefs on the client. We will investigate the concept that an individual’s spirituality is an invaluable resource in recovery and work with specific practices, such as meditation and mindfulness, as not only a part of the Twelve Step tradition, but as specific tools for stress reduction, and to help clients expand awareness and learn to meet life’s ups and downs without the intervening effects of chemical intoxication.
Instructor
Patricia A. Burke, MSW, LCSW is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, a Certified Clinical Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Social Worker, and a Certified Clinical Supervisor with over 25 years of clinical and teaching experience. She is also a qualified member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). She has been on the faculty of the Rutgers Summer School of Alcohol and Drug Studies since 1989 and the Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England since 1999. She has taught for the schools of social work at the University of Southern Maine, University of New England, and Rutgers University. She is currently on the faculty of the Union Institute & University BA program where she teaches in the Psychology & Human Development and Religion, Spirituality & Holistic Studies concentrations and coordinates the Addiction Studies specialty.
Most recently she was on the Expert Advisory Board of Managing Depressive Symptoms in Substance Abuse Clients During Early Recovery, Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) Series 48 (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2008). Other recent publications include three chapters in Psychological Trauma and Addiction Treatment (Haworth Press, 2006) titled Psychological Trauma and Addiction Treatment, Enhancing Hope and Resilience Through a Spiritually Sensitive Focus in the Treatment of Trauma and Addiction, and Clinician Self-Care. Course Objectives
- To understand the value of an individual’s spirituality as a resource in the recovery process.
- To learn how to investigate the addicted individual’s own concept of spirituality and integrate a non-religious, spiritual focus into the therapeutic process.
- To learn how to assess and transform addicted persons’ negative beliefs about themselves and life using their innate longing to connect to something greater than the limited ego-self.
- To become familiar with specific meditation and mindfulness exercises that can be taught to clients as an aid in stress reduction and a means to developing an ongoing and/or deeper relationship with a God Consciousness or Higher Power.
Course Requirements
This is a four-week course, beginning on August 08, 2011. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

Accreditation

- This four-week course, which begins on August 08, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
- ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 6 clock hours will be provided for this event.
