The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on developing an inclusive work environment and culturally relevant human services.
Cultural Competence is a growing professional practice within the United States. Federal, state, local, and non-governmental agencies are recognizing that the significant changes in demographics have fostered a paradigm shift in our understanding and practice of providing health and human services to culturally diverse communities and consumers. In essence it is a process by which organizations and their staff understand culturally diverse communities and clientele within the context of their life experiences and utilize said information as an asset to deliver best practices to all those accessing their services. Thus, it is paramount that administrators and staff alike of health and human service organizations’ initiate a process to assess, evaluate, and develop strategic planning activities that guide their delivery and performance systems. This course has been designed to enhance administrators and managers diversity and cultural competency leadership skills. Administrators and managers will be engaged in reading assignments and hands-on activities that will assess and evaluate their roles and responsibilities for fulfilling their agency’s goals for developing and sustaining an inclusive work environment and the delivery of culturally relevant services.
Instructor
Deoshore Haig, MSW, has twenty-five years of experience working with culturally diverse communities and managing health and human service programs. As an independent consultant, Ms. Haig�s services include designing and facilitating diversity and cultural competency training, developing health promotion programs, conducting program evaluations and providing technical assistance for organizational development. Deoshore has also served as a Special Guest Lecturer at Providence College, teaching diversity and cultural skills through the Social Work Department.
Ms. Haig received her BA from Potsdam College and has a Masters in Social Work from Rhode Island College. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and volunteers as a Health Advocate for the Health Connection Program through Lifespan.
Course Objectives
- Define diversity and identify its’ various social dimensions.
- Understand cultural competence and describe the framework for developing an inclusive workforce setting and the delivery of culturally relevant services.
- Recognize personal, professional, and organizational barriers that may impede the integration process of cultural competence within their organization.
- Identity managing diversity leadership skills and strategies for integrating and sustaining cultural competence within their organization.
Course Requirements
This is a four-week course, beginning on July 25, 2011. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

Accreditation

- This four-week course, which begins on July 25, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
- ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 3 clock hours will be provided for this event.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
