492 Substance Use Issues in Gay and Lesbian Clients: Considerations for Effective Practice

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) in colaboration with the Brown University Distance Learning Program, is offering a credited, on-line course on substance use issues in gay and lesbian clients.

This continuing education workshop will explore the risk factors for the development of problems with substance use involved in the struggle to develop a healthy identity in a society which has historically pathologized different sexual orientations. Interventions that are both sensitive to these issues as well as affirmative in working with people at various stages in their lives will be presented. This course is designed for a wide audience and in general will not exceed the graduate level in difficulty of material. The discussion material and information will be given via a class WWW page, with more in depth on-line information found through links to other web sites.

Instructor

William J. Pellicio, MA, LICSW, LCDP is an Assistant Professor at the Community College of Rhode Island, Department of Human Services and an Adjunct Faculty member in the Graduate School of Social Work at Rhode Island College. He has had many years of experience working with chemical dependency in hospital and outpatient settings. He has over 20 years of experience in clinical practice with gay men.

Course Objectives

• To describe the concept of oppression as it applies to gay men and lesbians and relate it to socialization in societies that rely on patriarchy, heterosexism and homophobia for social, economic and political maintenance.
• To recognize the risk factors for addiction which are associated with oppression.
• To discuss current theories and research on healthy identity development.
• To articulate appropriate interventions and the concept of gay-affirmative treatment in working with lesbians and gay men.

Course Requirements

This is a five-week course, beginning on June 28, 2010. Requirements are:

• Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
• Completion of pre and post test
• Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
• Participation in the weekly course forum
• Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

Accreditation

$60.00 Certification

• This five-week course, which begins on June 28, 2010, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
• This course meets the qualifications for 10 hours of continuing education credit for MFCC’s and/or LCSW’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE#1917).
• This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 10 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
• The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.

$100.00 Certification

• This Brown Distance Learning Program workshop is approved by the American Psychological Association for 10 CE’s for psychologists.  The Brown Distance Learning Program maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
