The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) in colaboration with the Brown University Distance Learning Program, is offering a credited, on-line course on working with Latinos in addiction treatment.
The Latino population in the United States is very diverse and continues to be disproportionately impacted by addiction. Studies show that Latino men and Latina women seeking addiction treatment confront many barriers to accessing culturally and linguistically competent care. Moreover, many of those that access care may leave treatment early because their needs are not adequately addressed. This four-week course will explore key cultural characteristics of the Latino community. Also, the course will explore how culture plays a role in how Latinos/as view addiction and treatment, and will provide practical strategies to engage and retain Latino/a clients in the addiction treatment process. The course is intended for those currently working with addicted Latinos/as, or anyone that is interested in gaining more knowledge and improving their skills.
Instructor
Dr. Hernández is originally from Puerto Rico and has lived in the United States since 1968. He is bilingual and has worked for over 20 years in the human service field developing, implementing, and evaluating culturally and linguistically competent youth and adult health prevention, intervention, treatment, and aftercare programs. Dr. Hernández has many years of experience in delivering addiction counseling and clinical supervision to professional in the field. Furthermore, he is a professional trainer and facilitator and provides individualized technical assistance and support to organizations that provide addiction and recovery services to the Latino population. Haner is a person in long-term recovery from addiction, and for the past 20 years has been committed to eliminating health disparities by working at the national, state, and local levels.
Dr. Hernández has served a consultant to several federally-funded initiatives in the areas of behavioral workforce development, HIV/AIDS, addiction prevention and treatment, PTSD and veterans, and pediatric asthma. Dr. Hernández serves as faculty at the New England School of Addiction Studies since 1998, has taught a number of undergraduate and graduate courses, and has presented at several national and state conferences. Dr. Hernández serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Board for Voluntary Certification of Drug and Alcohol Counselors and was appointed to the Springfield Public Health Council in 2006. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Springfield College and a Master of Education with concentrations in Counseling Psychology and Addiction Studies from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. His doctoral degree was earned at the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His major was Community Health Education and his minor was Social Justice Education. In addition, Mr. Hernandez holds an advance Certification in Drug and Alcohol Counseling at the reciprocal level and is licensed in Massachusetts.
Course Objectives
- Identify key cultural characteristics of the Latino/a community
- Discuss the impact of addiction on the Latino/a community and ways of viewing addiction and treatment from the perspective of Latino/a cultural contexts
- Discuss and explore effective strategies and techniques to working with Latinos/as
- Identify addiction recovery resources available for Latinos/as
Course Requirements
This is a four-week course, beginning on June 14, 2010. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.
A full refund is available up until June 22, 2010 after which there will be no refunds.
Accreditation
$60.00 Certification
- This four-week course, which begins on June 14, 2010, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.

- This Brown Distance Learning Program workshop is approved by the American Psychological Association for 8 CE’s for psychologists. The Brown Distance Learning Program maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
*Combined certificates are available upon request.
Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
