464 Improving Outcomes for Mandated Clients

Brown University Distance Learning Program is offering a credited, on-line course on improving outcomes for mandated clients.
Mandated clients make up a huge percentage of substance abuse treatment patients. Even those not formally mandated to treatment by a Court may be “mandated” by an EAP, parents, a spouse, or social services. When these “involuntary” clients are treated as if they are motivated for a complete change in lifestyle, the result is usually relapse-both to the drug of choice and the criminal lifestyle.
Goal: Improving Outcomes for Mandated Clients will offer practical advice that can be put to immediate use by counselors and clinicians to improve retention, graduation, and relapse rates.
Instructor
Nicholas A. Roes, Ph.D. is an author, and Executive Director of New Hope Manor, an all female residential substance abuse treatment center in Barryville, New York. He has appeared on hundreds of radio and television talk shows (including Donahue and Good Morning America), written six books, and more than 1,000 articles on a wide range of topics. His magazine column,”Road to Recovery”, appears in each issue of Addiction Professional magazine, the official publication of NAADAC and many other professional organizations.
Nick’s PhD, in Addictions Counseling, is from Westbrook University. He is a CASAC (Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor), CJC (Criminal Justice Counselor), APA Diplomate (American Psychotherapy Association), and IABMCP Professional Counseling Diplomate (International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling, and Psychotherapy). His master and bachelor degrees are from the University of Bridgeport, CT.
Nick has been an adjunct instructor for Marist College, and a guest lecturer at Rutgers University. He is also a faculty member of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Bureau of Workforce Development. Nick is a frequent presenter of workshops and trainings for addiction professionals.
Course Objectives
- To learn ways to distinguish oneself from the mandated party,
- To develop basic motivational interviewing skills, adapted for work with mandated clients,
- To become competent in several specific counseling techniques proven helpful with mandated clients, and
- To understand the relative merits of problem solving and goal achievement approaches.
Course Requirements
This is a four-week course, beginning on February 01, 2010. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.
A full refund is available up until February 09, 2010 after which there will be no refunds.
Accreditation
$60.00 Certification
- This four-week course, which begins on February 01, 2010, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course meets the qualifications for 8 hours of continuing education credit for MFCC’s and/or LCSW’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE#1917).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
$100.00 Certification
- This Brown Distance Learning Program workshop is approved by the American Psychological Association for 8 CE’s for psychologists. The Brown Distance Learning Program maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
*Combined certificates are available upon request.
Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
