573 Advanced Pharmacology: Staying Current with Drugs of Abuse

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on advanced pharmacology.

This course will discuss the trends of drugs that are being focused on by chemical dependency professionals. The content will include information regarding drugs that have historically been presenting in treatment programs and continue to provide challenges for chemical dependency prevention, intervention and treatment professionals as well as more recent substances of abuse. The course will provide a brief historical presentation of common substances of abuse and some of the research findings that are offering new directions for treatment approaches. Special attention will be given to marijuana, pain relievers, stimulants and club or designer drugs. Students will be given the opportunity of posting questions about specific drugs of abuse that they may wish to find more information about. Numerous links and web resources will also be provided to allow students the opportunity to continue professional development regarding trends in substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment research. Materials will be processed through group discussion, written assignments, and forums. This course is designed for a wide audience and in general will not exceed the graduate level in difficulty of material.

This four week course requires 8 hours of work over its duration.

Instructor

John Thompson, MA, CDP, LMHC is currently an Administrator/Clinical Supervisor at Pinnacle Peak Institute an outpatient treatment program in Washington State. He is a MET/CBT CSAT national consultant/trainer and a national GAIN trainer. John was an instructor in the Chemical Dependency Professional Institute through Tacoma Community College for six years. John obtained a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Chapman University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Western Washington University. He is a certified chemical dependency counselor and a licensed mental health counselor in the State of Washington. He began working in the field of Chemical Dependency treatment in 1989. John has worked as a therapist in a diverse breadth of settings including school based programs, juvenile institutions, street outreach, inpatient & outpatient AOD treatment facilities.

Course Objectives

• Provide a brief overview of the historical and current perspectives of psychoactive drugs
• Discuss newer drugs of abuse that have begun surfacing in drug abuse monitoring
• Review some common drugs of abuse that continue to provide challenges for addiction professionals
• Review current research findings that provide new guidance and direction in treatment approaches
• Create new links to state and federal sites that will provide ongoing updates on new research findings

Course Requirements

This is a four-week course, beginning on October 03, 2011. Requirements are:

• Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
• Completion of pre and post test
• Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
• Participation in the weekly course forum
• Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

• This four-week course, which begins on October 03, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
• This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
• The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.

• ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 9 clock hours will be provided for this event.
