586 Implementing Five Session Motivational Enhancement Therapy/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (MET/CBT5): An Evidence Based Brief Approach

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England , funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at Brown University Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, is offering a credited, on-line course on motivational enhancement and cognitive behavioral therapy.
This course will provide an overview of the SAMHSA/CSAT Motivational Enhancement Therapy – Cognitive Behavior Therapy 5 sessions (MET/CBT 5) manualized brief treatment manual. MET/CBT 5 is an Evidence Based adolescent treatment Practice which was adopted from well known adult treatment protocols. Basic concepts of Motivational Enhancement and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy will be covered to give the student the foundation needed to implement the MET/CBT 5 protocol. The MET/CBT 5 sessions will be covered in detail giving practical examples and implementation experiences.
Instructor
John Thompson, MA, CDP, LMHC is currently an Administrator/Clinical Supervisor at Pinnacle Peak Institute an outpatient treatment program in Washington State. He is a MET/CBT CSAT national consultant/trainer and a national GAIN trainer. John was an instructor in the Chemical Dependency Professional Institute through Tacoma Community College for six years. John obtained a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Chapman University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology/Mental Health Counseling from Western Washington University. He is a certified chemical dependency counselor and a licensed mental health counselor in the State of Washington. He began working in the field of Chemical Dependency treatment in 1989. John has worked as a therapist in a diverse breadth of settings including school based programs, juvenile institutions, street outreach, inpatient & outpatient AOD treatment facilities.
Course Objectives
- Apply Motivational Enhancement Therapy in a brief treatment model.
- Practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in a brief treatment model.
- Briefly discuss the CSAT Cannabis Youth Treatment (CYT) research study and the effective adolescent treatment (EAT) expansion grant in relation to the MET/CBT 5 protocol.
- Review the MET/CBT 5 SAMHSA/CSAT protocol & manual.
- Apply the MET/CBT 5 manual with adolescents who have substance abuse issues.
Course Requirements
This is a five-week course, beginning on December 05, 2011. Requirements are:
- Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
- Completion of pre and post test
- Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
- Participation in the weekly course forum
- Completion of an on-line course evaluation
*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant’s convenience.

- This five-week course, which begins on December 05, 2011, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
- This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 10 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC’s). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
- The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.
- ATTC of New England DLP is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP ™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. (provider # 6463) 7 clock hours will be provided for this event.
