About The New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center Distance Learning Program @ Brown University’s CAAS

The Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies Distance Learning Program began in 1997 as a collaborative effort between Brown University’s Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies (CAAS) and the New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center , which is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA)  Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.  When the program was originally chartered, it provided one continuing education course per month to addiction treatment specialists and other interested treatment professionals through convenient “cyber” classrooms.  Since that time, the Distance Learning Program has significantly expanded its capacity, and currently offers an average of five courses per month covering a broad range of addiction-related treatment and prevention topics. To date, the program has provided training to participants from all fifty United States, including Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, and nearly fifty foreign countries on six continents.

The backbone of the CAAS Distance Learning Program is a diverse cadre of expert instructors from across the United States.  The program’s instructors are seasoned presenters, and are regularly evaluated based on student reviews to insure top-quality instruction and consistency.  Over the years, the program has employed over 30 instructors, adding two new instructors to the pool each year, on average.
