477 Advanced Pharmacology: Staying Current with Drugs of Abuse

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) in colaboration with the Brown University Distance Learning Program, is offering a credited, on-line course on advanced pharmacology.

The focus will be to look at some of the new drugs of abuse that are creating problems for treatment professionals, to look at old drugs that are returning in popularity, and to look at some of the research findings that are providing new direction for treatment approaches. Special attention will be given to the following drugs Ketamine®, inhalants, steroids, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol. Students will be provided the opportunity of posting questions about specific drugs of abuse that they may wish to find more information about. Numerous links and web resources will also be provided to allow students to maintain the opportunity of staying on top of the newest findings from federal research projects. Materials will be processed through group discussion, written assignments, and group projects. This course is designed for a wide audience and in general will not exceed the graduate level in difficulty of material.

Instructor

Kevin Scheel, MS, MAC, LMFT, Director of Educational Services for the Distance Learning Center for Addiction Studies. Mr. Scheel has more than 25 years of experience in the chemical dependency field and has been an instructor/trainer for the past 14 years. He has a Master's of Science in Counseling and Guidance with specialization in Addiction Treatment from the University of Nebraska.

Course Objectives

Provide an overview to psychoactive drugs
Discuss newer drugs of abuse that have surfacing in treatment programs
Review some common drugs of abuse that are creating new problems for addiction professionals
Review current research findings that provide new guidance and direction in treatment approaches
Create new links to state and federal sites that will provide ongoing updates on new research findings

Course Requirements

This is a four-week course, beginning on April 26, 2010. Requirements are:

Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
Completion of pre and post test
Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
Participation in the weekly course forum
Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class home page on Tuesday and responses are due the following Monday. With the exception of the first weeks lesson which will be posted Monday with the responses due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant's convenience.

A full refund is available up until May 04, 2010 after which there will be no refunds.

Accreditation

$60.00 Certification

This four-week course, which begins on April 26, 2010, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Brown Distance Learning program, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151).
This course meets the qualifications for 8 hours of continuing education credit for MFCC's and/or LCSW's as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE#1917).
This course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for 8 Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC's). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
The New York State OASAS does accept distance learning CEUs provided by institutions of higher learning for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.

$100.00 Certification

This Brown Distance Learning Program workshop is approved by the American Psychological Association for 8 CE's for psychologists. The Brown Distance Learning Program maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

*Combined certificates are available upon request.

Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.
